Young Australian Faces Charges for Allegedly Attaching Googly Eyes on ‘Cast in Blue’ Sculpture
A teenager from the Land Down Under has faced legal proceedings after reportedly vandalizing a sizable art piece of a mythical creature by applying googly eyes to it.
The 19-year-old, aged 19, appeared via phone at the local court in South Australia on that day, facing with a single charge of damaging property.
Officials commented at the moment of the September incident, the local council explained that CCTV footage captured a individual placing fake eyes on the artwork, which residents have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.
Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and informed the court she was ill, according to media sources, with the judge recommending her to secure a lawyer before her next court date in December.
The following day the reported event, the local mayor said that repairs to the much-loved community sculpture would be expensive as the stickers could not be detached without harming the sculpture.
“This wilful damage to a valued community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor said in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is costly - it is also disappointing to those members of our community who have welcomed the Blue Blob.”
The mayor added the local government would seek the “substantial” repair costs from those responsible for the damage.
When the artwork was initially suggested, it drew mixed reactions from the local community due to its cost and design.
Priced at 136,000 Australian dollars ($89,000; £68,000), the sculpture represents a legendary giant animal, with the sculpture’s designers inspired by an ancient anteater-like marsupial discovered in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
