One extended voyage around the Land Down Under is being halted following the fatal incident of an older female passenger who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant coastal location.

The passenger had been hiking on the remote island with shipmates from the cruise ship, but broke off from the group for a rest. The liner departed without her and went back later that day after the crew became aware the passenger was unaccounted for.

An extensive hunt located her body the subsequent day.

Authorities are examining the incident, together with police and the official investigator.

Head of the shipping company stated that passengers and staff on the ship were notified that the rest of the journey had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and previous technical problems".

In a statement, he added that passengers would be provided a full refund, and said the organization was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the passengers via private aircraft".

Officials also released an updated communication, and said they had "delivered a order to the Master" preventing any new passengers from getting on the ship.

The official said that they would inspect the ship in the port city upon its return.

Chronology of Events

The ship originally sailed from the coastal city on 24 October, and was merely two days into the expedition at the moment of the elderly woman's death. The remote island was the initial destination on the voyage.

Passengers on board - who usually pay tens of thousands of currency to join the expedition - were transported there for a shore visit with the option of walking or snorkelling.

Family Response

The offspring of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "stunned and grieved that the liner left the island after an scheduled excursion without my mum".

Via her announcement, she portrayed her mother as an "vigorous 80-year-old" who was a member of a bushwalking club.

"According to scant information we have been told, it appears that there was a lapse of responsibility and common sense," she said.

She continued that she desired the investigation would be able to determine what "the company should have done that might have saved Mum's existence".

"We understand from the authorities that it was a exceptionally warm afternoon, and mum became unwell on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"She was asked her to go back, without accompaniment. Then the vessel left, reportedly without doing a passenger count.

"At some stage in that sequence, or shortly after, mother died, alone."

Operator Reaction

Via official communication, the CEO verified that the organization was "collaborating extensively with officials to support their investigation".

He stated that the company was "extremely apologetic that this has happened" and had provided its complete assistance to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Procedures

The ship accommodates up to 120 travelers with forty-six staff, according to company details. It was purpose-built to reach remote locations of the nation's coastline and is outfitted with "small boats" - minor craft used to take individuals on land visits.

Incidents like this are uncommon, and liners have procedures to record which passengers are getting on or leaving, according to industry experts.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] on the ship just isn't an option," one expert stated.

Cruise lines take these procedures with great importance and have "advanced technology in place to avoid such incidents from happening," the authority continued.

"This is presumably a surprising - and sad - one-off."
