The Showrunner Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the popular program coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Fan Response
One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to avoid both.
“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
