The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant boost to United’s attacking options. She has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
