The Mayor-Elect affirms his intention to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, hesitated to declare he would live there right away following his electoral win in November.
"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing my complete efforts on enacting the platform on affordability voters supported," Mamdani said on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live within me and the work I do," he added.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
However his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his humble Astoria home.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated consistent with the home's original era.
The compound, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.
City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
