The Israeli government disputes these accusations, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is accused of. But while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, apparently, is what global togetherness looks like.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that once promoted peace has devolved into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
