British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
